After close elections in both the Programming and Hesed and Tzedek vice-presidential races, the administration decided to add two additional vice presidential positions so that small, insignificant margins would not determine a school-wide election. So, for the first time in Heschel High School history, two student council groups are led by co-Vice Presidents. Juniors Hannah Goldman and Haym Suissa run the Hesed and Tzedek council, and Juniors Maddie Freidland and Liam Bahar run the Programming council.
“Communication was definitely my biggest worry,” said co-VP Hannah Goldman.
“Now we have to coordinate three people’s schedules instead of two,” said Lindsay Biebelberg, advisor and faculty overseer for the Hesed and Tzedek council.
Although, the worries may have been unnecessary. “Communication has been great,” said Suissa.
While Suissa was out of school for two weeks with a concussion, Goldman kept him in the loop. “I have a lot of trust in her and I know council is going well without me.”
Co-VP Maddie Freidland said, “When I have extra time or when Liam is sick, it means that we can and do cover for each other. One of us would meet with Rabbi Jonathan and then catch the other up.”
She continued, “It is really helpful to have two people to run committees, especially with the Town Hall committee. We were able to have a much stronger student voice in that town hall.”
“Not too much has changed,” said junior Yalei Ravin who has been on the Hesed and Tzedek council since her sophomore year. “The one thing is that having two VP’s has allowed the council to be productive even when one of them is sick. It’s not a big deal to have two VPs.”
