Heschel’s Ultimate team entered this season with high hopes as the reigning city and state champions. After last season, Heschel Heat’s ultimate frisbee team is the team to beat, and many other teams have created specialized schemes to slow down Heschel’s star-studded roster.
One of these schemes, created by rival Brooklyn Tech, is called the “fire extinguisher” to put out the Heat. Nevertheless, the Ultimate team is confident that, despite being watched by the entire league, they have the right pieces in place to go back to back.
Senior and team captain Beni Lederman said, “I am really hopeful and think we can go really far.”
The team’s first game, against SAR, may not have counted for its record, but it allowed for the team to find its new identity. After that, the team played its season opener against Bronx Science and won 13-6. The game featured several highlight-reel plays, including a “Callahan” by junior Zachary Altman.
The third game was played against Ramaz and was dubbed by team captain Senior Nate Weiss as “The Manhattan Makhloket.” The game’s final score was 14-8, with a special appearance from Coach Bell’s son, Edson, along with many fans from Heschel. Their game against Beacon was senior night, and many fans and parents came to support their friends and family. The Heat pulled off a hard fought 15-12 victory.
