On March 10, the Heschel Math Team traveled to SAR High School to compete in their first in-person competition. While the team’s weekly online contests are a great experience, team captains, seniors Abe Charkow and Parker Slarskey, knew that in-person competitions would spark more excitement from the group. The two captains put a tremendous amount of effort into planning the event; they reached out to the SAR student leaders back in November and, from there, helped every step of the way to coordinate the competition.
Seven groups, each consisting of four students from four different Yeshiva League high schools, participated in the competition. They competed in a bracket with three preliminary rounds and one final face off. Although they did not win, the eight Heschel students who attended had extraordinary performances and showcased their brilliant math skills.
Senior captain Charkow said, “I am so proud to watch the team Parker and I built flourish. I am glad we were able to give our fellow students opportunities to compete. I feel like a proud parent!”
After transforming the team from a group of four students to nearly 20 students from all grades, Charkow and Slarskey are extremely proud of the math team and are pleased to leave it in the hands of a group of highly motivated and committed young mathematicians!
