This year’s Purim costume contest was full of vibrant and well-planned student costumes. Here are some of the best and most unique costumes from the competition:
Walter White & Jesse Pinkman: Juniors Yair Cohen and Ari Vogel took to the runway with their rendition of the dynamic duo from the show Breaking Bad. Sporting their yellow hazmat suits, both Cohen and Vogel embodied their respective characters. “After ordering the hazmat suits Walter and Jesse wear while working, we realized our costumes might still not be immediately recognizable,” Cohen said. To combat this potential issue, they added props to their costume, such as Walter’s fedora and Jesse’s beanie. These additions clearly distinguished the two characters and elevated the costume to a whole new level.
The two also used blue-colored pop rocks in little plastic bags to pay homage to the show. Not only did the pop rocks add to the costume, but they were also a delicious treat for the audience to enjoy!
JoJo Siwa: The consecutive winners of the last two group costume contests, juniors Amelie Prevor, Rose Harnoy, and LQ teacher Dov Nelkin, demolished their competition with a group JoJo Siwa costume.
“We wanted to bring it back like a boomerang,” Prevor said.
Not only were their outfits spot on, but they conveyed a history through their costume. By representing different iconic moments in Siwa’s career, the three told an interactive story of the complex character that Siwa is. Impressively, Nelkin’s elaborate Karma-era makeup was done by Prevor and Harnoy, revealing the hard work and devotion that went into the making of this costume.
LeBron James: There are few things senior Leeraz Joseph cannot pull off, exemplified by this costume and, particularly, her strap-on beard. A simple yet effective outfit, Joseph sported a LeBron jersey, basketball, and an unforgettable beard. Joseph did not hesitate to embrace her character; she confidently dribbled her way down the runway with enthusiasm and skill, showing off her talents as an accomplished member of Heschel’s Girls Varsity Basketball Team. Some may argue that this costume was too basic; however, they do not understand the artistry and specificity needed to portray a well-known character, let alone a real person, accurately .
The Lorax x2: Perhaps the most jaw-dropping costume of the year, senior twins Olivia and Charlotte Levine decked out in orange from head-to-toe for their matching Lorax costumes.
“Charlotte and I really wanted to go all out,” Olivia Levine said.
“Going all out” would be putting this costume lightly. Not only were these outfits a great source of laughs, but it also had a message. The Lorax advocates for the preservation of trees, which is no small act. By having not one, but two Loraxes, one could interpret it as an even more impactful message advocating for the trees.
Bravo to all of this year’s contestants and I look forward to seeing everyone’s costumes next year!
