Broadway’s fall season included numerous critically acclaimed shows, so there is no doubt that the spring season will not disappoint. With performances from George Clooney, Jake Gyllenhaal, Denzel Washington, Sadie Sink, and many more, this spring’s lineup of shows is sure to appeal to all kinds of theatergoers.
The diversity in musicals this year is impressive, with several completely original musicals and some based on books, movies, TV shows, and even cartoon characters.
Buena Vista Social Club is inspired by the true stories of the members of the 1950s musical ensemble. Its score is entirely in Spanish–unlike several other shows this season! The show opened on March 19 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre.
Operation Mincemeat is set in 1946 and is a comedic adaptation of the true story of how several British officers successfully deceived Hitler and the Nazis with a dead body, forged legal documents, and a fake love letter. The musical opened on March 20 and is running at the Golden Theatre.
The Picture of Dorian Gray is the stage adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s novel. The show stars Emmy Award Winner Sarah Snook as she plays 26 different characters.. The show opened on March 27 at the Music Box Theater.
Boop! The Betty Boop Musical follows the life of the classic cartoon character Betty Boop as she uses a time machine to transport herself from her black-and-white cartoon life to New York City in 2023. The musical opened on April 5 at the Broadhurst Theatre.
Smash is based on the 2012 TV show, Smash, a fictional story that tells the creation of a musical about Marilyn Monroe called “Bombshell.” The show opened on April 10 at the Imperial Theatre.
Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends is a tribute musical to the late Broadway legend, featuring Lea Salonga and Bernadette Peters. The show opened on April 8 at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre.
Just In Time is a new musical about singer Bobby Darin that turns the theatre into an interactive nightclub. Broadway star Jonathan Groff returns after his successful run as Franklin Shepard in Merrily We Roll Along last year. The show opened on April 23 at the Circle in the Square Theatre.
Dead Outlaw is a new musical about the insane true story of Elmer McCurdy, the infamous bank robber whose death caught the attention of millions. The show opened on April 27 at the Longacre Theatre.
Real Women Have Curves is based on the play of the same name and the 2002 film that followed the play. The show opened on April 27 at the James Earl Jones Theatre.
In addition to the musicals coming this spring, there are also some new plays joining the Broadway community!
Stranger Things: The First Shadow is a prequel to the extremely popular Netflix show, Stranger Things. The play is set in 1959 Hawkins, Indiana, and describes the origin story of the show’s villain, Henry Creel–also known as Vecna. The show opened on April 22nd at the Marquis Theatre.
Relatedly, Sadie Sink, one of the stars in Netflix’s Stranger Things known for her role as Max Mayfield, is coming to Broadway this season! Sink and several other actresses star in a new play titled John Proctor is the Villain. The comedic play depicts a high school English class questioning parts of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. Directed by Tony Award Winner Danya Taymor, this play is definitely something to be excited for! The show opened on April 14th at the Booth Theatre.
