Heschel’s 9th grade elected Lily Weiss, James Kashan, Gershon Leib, and Ben Gilad as their grade representatives on Oct. 25.
In her speech, Weiss said, “I aim to enhance our school experience by organizing exciting events and games that will not only bring us together as a grade but also as a community.”
All of the candidates spoke about incorporating Heschel’s four core values of responsibility, respect, community, and safety into the freshmen class. They said that, with these values, the 9th grade will continue to unite and embark on exciting activities, especially new additions to the high school. It is essential that relationships are built not only within the freshman class but across the whole high school.
In Kashan’s speech, he said, “I would like to try to create more Hesed opportunities in school so we can all contribute in meaningful ways.” Hesed is an important part of our education and a core value of our school. The 9th graders are thrilled to take part in Hesed activities and make a change by attending food pantries, organizing trips to help people with limited resources, and much more.
The theme of bridging the gap between the student body and administration also emerged from the candidates’ speeches. Creating an open environment where everyone feels comfortable expressing their concerns is a key role of grade representatives.
Leib said, “I will ensure the wants and needs of the grade that were once unfeasible become slightly less unfeasible by sending out polls or through a suggestion box.”
There is no doubt that representatives will work on new issues that arise as the year progresses, and we are thankful for the many platforms they plan to create for us to communicate successfully with one another.
Helios congratulates Weiss, Kashan, Leib, and Gilad and looks forward to all that they will achieve.
