Heschel is surrounded by numerous cafes, and every student has their personal favorite for coffee. But you may be surprised to learn that the same drink contains different levels of caffeine, depending on where you grab your morning Joe. So, where can you get the largest boost for your buck?
The lowest caffeine content is in the coffee served in Heschel’s very own cafeteria, which contains 60 mg of caffeine per 12 oz. cup. Although this is not too high of an intake, it’s free!
Next is Common Address. A 16 fl. oz. iced latte here contains 62.5 mg of caffeine for $6. The cafe claims to have “specialty” coffee, as they use Kona coffee beans sourced from the Kona Coffee Belt in Hawaii (the only place in the world where these beans are grown).
Third is Pick-A-Bagel. The Heschel staple’s iced latte is also 16 fl. oz. and contains 120 mg of caffeine: at a price of $5.25, almost double the intake at Common Address, and $0.75 cheaper. In fact, you’d have to add $1.50 for an extra shot at Common Address to get an equivalent amount of caffeine. So the same amount of caffeine costs $5.25 at Pick-A-Bagel and $7.50 at Common Address. When you drink coffee daily, this difference will add up quickly.
Next is Starbucks, with 150 mg of caffeine in a “grande” (16 fl. oz.) iced latte for $5.65. Starbucks offers a middle-ground price between Common Address and Pick-A-Bagel, and it will perk you up more than either one.
Second place goes to White Noise Coffee Co. Located on 57th Street, this cafe is a bit farther of a walk, but its 16 fl. oz. iced latte contains 160mg of caffeine for $6. Yes, that’s the same price as at Common Address, but almost triple the caffeine.
Victorious is pre-packaged Super Coffee from Morton Williams. This 12 fl. oz. beverage is a coffee and energy drink combo with 200 mg of caffeine for only $4. If you’re looking for real ground coffee, then Super Coffee may not be the best choice, as it is partially an energy drink. But if all you want is a strong, affordable caffeine kick, you’ve found one!
