The junior class had their Prevention Solutions program on Monday, Nov. 27. Unlike previous years, the 11th graders took part in a new program run by the CCSA, a Jewish organization.

The grade was split into two groups. One heard from an SAR alumnus who was exposed to drugs at a young age and ended up homeless and addicted to heroin; the other group heard from Sam who spoke about his unhealthy relationship with marijuana and his mental health struggles. After hearing these personal anecdotes, students were presented with slides that detailed the effects of alcohol and drugs on the teenage brain and body. 

Some students then created public service announcements in the form of posters and videos. Others attempted to perform various basic tasks while wearing goggles that simulate the effects of drugs or alcohol. 

Many students liked the new program. Abby Bruhim commented, “I appreciated hearing from a Jewish organization; it felt closer to home.” 

While others did not love the focus of the program: “I didn’t love how heavily focused it was on addiction. I would have rather learn practical real-world strategies,” said junior Elana Farbiarz.
